Abstract:Objective To investigate the infection status and genotyping of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in hospitalized children with acute respiratory tract infection (ARTI) in a grade-A tertiary hospital in Yueyang City. Methods Clinical data and nasopharyngeal swabs were collected from children under 14 years of age who were hospitalized with ARTI in the above-mentioned hospital from July 2019 to June 2020. HMPV was detected by real-time polymerase chain reaction. The HMPV-positive samples were genotyped for M and F. The infection characteristics and genotyping features of HMPV in children with ARTI were analyzed. Results A total of 60 children patients with ARTI were positive for HMPV in 3,175 nasopharyngeal swabs detected, with a positive detection rate of 1.9%. The patients with HMPV infection ranged in age from 23 days to 8 years. The proportion of infants under 1 year old was 30.0% (18/60). Summer (57.7%) and autumn (36.7%) were predominant in the seasonal distribution, and no HMPV infection was detected in spring. Among the 60 children with HMPV infection, the main clinical diagnoses were bronchitis (65.0%, 39/60) and pneumonia (26.7%, 16/60), and the main clinical manifestations were fever (71.7%, 43/60) and cough (71.7%, 43/60). In the patients infected with HMPV, the HMPV A2b genotype accounted for 53.3%. Conclusion HMPV infection was most common in infants under 1 year old. The prevalence peak occurred in summer and autumn during the monitoring period. Bronchitis was the main diagnosis of the HMPV patients. The main prevalent strain was A2b type.
