Abstract:Objective:To understand awareness of mental health and attitude to patients with mental disorders in Harbin community residents so as to provide reference data and scientific evidence for formulating further targeted strategies. Methods:Based on a multistage sampling method between October and December 2013, 720 residents including community doctors, patient’s relatives and common residents were randomly selected. Awareness of mental health and attitude to mental disorders among different populations and from different regions were compared, and meanwhile their influence factors were investigated. Results:In this study, 702 questionnaires were recycled, with a recovery rate of 97.50%; the total awareness rate of mental health in respondents is 73.44%, the awareness rate of mental health in community doctors (85.25%) is a little higher than those in patient’s relatives and common residents, and the awareness rate of mental health in urban residents (74.55%) is a little higher than that in rural residents (70.40%). The total awareness score of mental health in respondents is significantly different age categories of respondents (P<0.05), the score in old-aged respondents is significantly lower than those in middle-aged respondents and young respondents. Community residents have a better attitude or degree of tolerance to patients with mental disorders, the degree of tolerance for patients in suburban and rural residents is better than those in city residents. There is no correlation between awareness of mental health and attitude to patients with mental disorders in community residents (Spearman correlation analysis, rs=-0.01420, P=0.7078). Conclusion:The total awareness rate of mental health in community residents in Harbin has not yet met the demands of the National Mental Health Plan by 2015 (namely achieving an awareness rate of 80% by 2015). Although raising the educational levels of community residents would improve awareness of mental health, the keys to the residents’ tolerance to patients with mental disorders lie in how to carry out publicity and education, and how to increase the satisfaction about publicity and education in community residents. Educational level, familiarity with patients and population category were influence factors of awareness of mental health. Satisfaction about publicity and education, age and living district were influence factors of attitude to patients with mental disorders.
