Abstract:Objective To analyze the sodium content and sources of the prepackaged food in the rural areas of Sichuan Province so as to provide reference for developing measures to reduce salt (sodium) intake. Methods Four cities (counties) were selected in Sichuan Province by simple random sampling method from July to August, 2014, and a small supermarket and a convenience store were randomly sampled in a town in each county. The food ingredients on the food labels were photographed. The sodium content and the percentage of nutrient reference value (NRV%) of the prepackaged food were collected, and then the food samples were graded according to the content of sodium. The market prices of the prepackaged food were collected, and the minimum serving prices (MSPs) were calculated. Results The proportions of the food samples with low-, medium- and high-sodium were 42.2% (116/275), 23.6% (65/275) and 34.2% (94/275) respectively. The food samples with medium- and high-sodium were mainly meat, eggs and seafood, cereals, bean and bean products, vegetables and fruits, and tubers. Moreover, the food samples with MSPs < 5 Yuan were more than those with MSPs ≥ 5 Yuan. The sources of sodium were salt, soy sauce, monosodium glutamate and other seasonings, and sodium additives. Conclusions The prepackaged food with medium- and high-sodium contents establishes an affordable and high-sodium food environment for rural children and adolescents in Sichuan Province in 2014, which may be one of the risk factors for their hypertension. Therefore, it is necessary to promote and guide the food enterprises to reduce sodium content in prepackaged food.
