Abstract:Objective To investigate the nutritional status of vitamin D and its affecting factors amongst rural adult residents in Tongzhou District, Beijing. Methods A stratified cluster sampling method was used to randomly select permanent residents from 6 administrative villages in 3 townships of Tongzhou District for conducting a questionnaire survey, physical examination and venous blood sample collection. The residents’ serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-(OH)D) concentration was determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-tandem mass spectrometry, and their nutritional status of vitamin D was evaluated. Multivariate ordered logistic regression model was employed to explore the factors influencing vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency. Results A total of 534 residents completed the survey. The residents’ serum 25-(OH)D showed a positively skewed distribution, with a median of 16.60(12.70, 22.03)ng/ml. The prevalence rates of vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency were 48.50% (259/534) and 18.91% (101/534) respectively. Multivariate regression analysis displayed that rural female adultresidents (OR=2.413, 95%CI:1.725-3.380), residents aged 18-44 years (OR=1.842, 95%CI:1.090-3.114), and adult residents with overweight (OR=1.605, 95%CI:1.013-2.545) and obesity (OR=1.696, 95%CI:1.017-2.824) were at higher risk of vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency. Conclusion The nutritional status of vitamin D among rural adult residents in Tongzhou District is not optimistic. Special attention should be paid to vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency in rural women and young, middle-aged, overweight and obese groups.
