Abstract:Objective To investigate the condition of abnormal spinal curvature and its influencing factors in primary and secondary school students of the Tujia ethnic minority in Zhangjiajie, and to provide scientific evidence for prevention and control of this disease. Methods From October to November 2020, a stratified cluster sampling method was used to select primary and secondary school students in Zhangjiajie for screening and questionnaire survey of abnormal spinal curvature. χ2 test and logistic regression analysis were employed to analyze the factors influencing the incidence rate of abnormal spinal curvature. Results Among the 4,866 valid respondents, the detection rate of abnormal spinal curvature was 2.59% (n=126), of which the detection rate of Tujia ethnicity students (n=4,036) was 2.53% (n=102). Among the primary and secondary school students of the Tujia ethnicity, there were statistically significant differences in the prevalence of abnormal spinal curvature among individuals with different educational levels, different nutritional status and from different areas (urban areas and suburban counties). There were 96 (94.12%) cases of abnormal spinal curvature degree Ⅰ and 6 (5.88%) cases of abnormal spinal curvature degree Ⅱ, but no cases of abnormal spinal curvature degree Ⅲ were detected. Logistic regression analysis revealed that female students (OR=0.59, 95%CI:0.37-0.93) and teachers frequently or always reminding students to pay attention to reading and writing posture (OR=0.45, 95%CI:0.26-0.79) were the protective factors for abnormal spinal curvature in the primary and secondary school students of the Tujia ethnicity in Zhangjiajie. High school students had higher risk of abnormal spinal curvature than pupils (OR=2.01, 95%CI:1.07-3.78). Conclusion The detection rate of abnormal spinal curvature in the primary and secondary school studentsof the Tujia ethnicity in Zhangjiajie is relatively high. To strengthen health education about reading and writing posture in schools may be an important measure to prevent scoliosis.
