Abstract:ObjectiveTo investigate the present rural status of water quality and sanitation improvement, garbage and sewage treatment in Hunan province, and provide the basis for the relevant administrative departments to improve rural sanitation.Methods30 counties, 600 villages and 3003 families were selected by stratified random sampling to investigate. Data were obtained through information collection, interviews, and field observation using uniform questionnaires. ResultsThe coverage rate was 61.58% for access to centralized water supply. The main treatment of central water supply is precipitate filter, accounting for 39.55% of the monitoring population. Disinfection accounted for only 34.74% (including complete processing and disinfection only). The coverage rate of hygienic toilet was 55.84%. The main treatment of hygienic toilet is complete sewer flush, accounting for 55.12%. There was a lack of public toilet in rural areas. The main coverage of garbage and sewage treatment plant is township residents; the main treatment of garbage plant was landfill. The main method of household waste collecting in rural areas was piling up in the specified sites (56.33%), there was still some rubbish piling up randomly (14%) The main method of rubbish treatment was burning, accounting for 60%. The mean output of sewage was 64.84 tons per day. The main methods for sewage treatment were discharge freely (44%) and discharge in open drain (38%). ConclusionThe situation is not standardized that rural status of water quality and sanitation improvement, garbage and sewage treatment in Hunan province. It still exist many various health-related risk factors. Hence effective measures are needed urgently to improve rural sanitation
