Abstract:Objective To investigate the differences in the etiology of infectious diarrhea between adults and children in Baoan District, Shenzhen City. Methods Stool specimens were collected from adults (>14 years old) and children (0-14 years old) with infectious diarrhea in Baoan District, Shenzhen City from January, 2012 to December, 2014, and pathogens were isolated and identified. The detection results were statistically analyzed. Results A total of 4,512 adult specimens were detected, and pathogens were detected in 17.00% of the samples. The main pathogen identified was Vibrio parahaemolyticus, with the detection rate of 7.49%. The typical symptoms of diarrhea were abdominal pain and watery stool, present respectively in 65.81% and 53.57% of the adult patients. 2,608 children specimens were detected, and pathogens were identified in 28.80% of the samples. The main pathogens detected were rotavirus and norovirus, with the detection rates of 10.35% and 8.44% respectively. The typical symptoms of diarrhea were fever and watery stool, and the detection rates were 32.28% and 46.78% respectively. Adults’ and children’s diarrhea mainly occurred in summer and fall. Conclusions In Baoan District, Shenzhen City in 2012-2014, Vibrio parahaemolyticus is the main pathogen for infectious diarrhea in adults while rotavirus and norovirus are the main pathogens for infectious diarrhea in children. We should intensify the monitoring of different populations and adopt targeted prevention and control measures according to the prvalence of different pathogens in different seasons.
