Influence of children's sociality and maternal parenting efficiency on the acceptance of second-born children

Abstract:Objective To explore the correlations among children's sociality, maternal parenting efficiency and mothers' socioeconomic status, and to analyze the influence of above-mentioned three factors on the acceptance degree of second-born children. Methods A stratified cluster sampling method was used to select 880 students from two kindergartens and two primary schools and their mothers in a city, Anhui Province to serve as the research subjects. The contents of the survey mainly included children's sociality, maternal parenting efficiency and socioeconomic status and children's acceptance degree of second-born children. Multivariate linear regression analysis was applied to screening out the factors influencing children's acceptance degree ofsecond-born children. Results There were statistically significant differences in the acceptance degree of second-born children among children from different grades and between the only-child and the non-only-child (P<0.05). Correlation analysis showed that mothers' satisfaction and efficacy were positively correlated with peer relationship, but negatively correlated with children's prosocial behavior (P<0.05), showing statistically significant differences (P<0.05). Multivariate regression analysis revealed that there was a statistically significant difference in young children's acceptance degree of second-born children between the only-child and the non-only-child (P<0.05). In children's sociality, the peer relationship had a negative predictive effect on young children' acceptance degree of second-born children (P<0.05), but prosocial behavior had a positive predictive effect on young children' acceptance degree of second-born children (P<0.01). Conclusions Good peer relationship and prosocial behavior are conducive to improving children's acceptance of second-born children. Families and schools should attach importance to children's social development and provide help for children to accept second-born children.
