Abstract:Objective To explore the changes of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1(VCAM-1)in serum and cerebrospinal fluid(CSF) and their clinical values in children with EV71 encephalitis. Methods According to the clinical manifestations, children patients were divided into ordinary case group and severe case group (which were subdivided into heavy type group and critical type group). A control group was set. The concentrations of VEGF and sVCAM-1 in serum and CSF of each patient of each group were detected by double antibody sandwich ELISA method. Results The levels of VEGF and sVCAM-1 in serum and CSF were not significantly different between the ordinary case group and control group (both P>0.05), but significantly higher in the severe case group than the ordinary case group and control group(all P<0.01), in the critical type group than the heavy type group(P<0.01 or P<0.05), in the critical type group and heavy type group than the control group (P<0.01 or P<0.05), as well as in the acute phase of severe case group than in the recovery phase and than the control group(all P<0.01). Serum and CSF VEGF, sVCAM-1 were positively correlated in the severe case group (r=0.587, r=0.648, both P<0.01) , while there were not significant correlations in the ordinary case group and control group. Conclusions VEGF and VCAM-1 may participate in the pathogenesis of EV71 encephalitis. Detection of the two parameters may be helpful to evaluating the severity and prognosis of EV71 encephalitis.
