Abstract:Objective To analyze the incidence and mortality of stomach cancer in Hunan Province from 2009 to 2012. Methods The gastric cancer data of 6 tumor registered regions in Hunan Province during 2009 to 2012 were used to analyze the incidence and death rates of stomach cancer and their changing trends in Hunan Province in recent years. Results The crude incidence rate of stomach cancer was 16.13/100,000 (21.34/100,000 for the males,10.55/100,000 for the females). The age standardized incidence rates by Chinese standard population (ASR China) and by world standard population (ASR World) were 12.43/100,000 and 12.06/100,000 respectively, which ranked the sixth of all malignant tumors in Hunan Province during 2009-2012. A higher rate was found in the males than in the females. The mortality rate of gastric cancer in the same period was 11.86/100,000 (15.94/100,000 for the males and 7.49/100,000 for the females). The age standardized incidence rates by ASR China and ASR World were 8.98/100,000 and 8.69/100,000 respectively, which ranked as the third leading cause of all malignant tumors, with a higher rate in the males than in the females. The age standardized incidence and mortality rates by ASR China were slightly higher in cities than in rural areas. The incidence and mortality rates of gastric cancer were basically increased with the increasing age. The differences of ASR in the incidence and mortality rates by Chinese population among different regions were found as high as 2.54 and 2.38 folds respectively. Conclusions The incidence rate of gastric cancer is relatively low in Hunan Province from 2009 to 2012, but the mortality is still relatively high. There are substantial variations in the incidence and mortality rates of gastric cancer in different ages and regions.
