Abstract:Objective To understand the relationship between parental rearing styles and children'sscreen time among preschoolers in urban areas of Wuhu City. Methods A cluster random sampling method was used to select preschoolers from 12 kindergartens in Jinghu District, Jiujiang District and Jingkai District of Wuhu City. An electronic questionnaire survey was conducted to collect the data regarding children's time spent watching videos, outdoor activities, general information about their families and parental rearing styles. Logistic regression analysis method was employed to identify the factors affecting children's screen time. Results In Wuhu City, the proportion of preschoolers who spend over 1 hour every day on watching videos was 41.49%. In the aspect of parental rearing styles, the scores of indulgence, democracy, overindulgence, autocracy andinconsistency were (8.84±2.33), (39.31±6.19), (14.18±3.98), (17.71±4.42) and (10.44±3.58) respectively. Parents'education level, main caregivers, time spent on outdoor activities and parental rearing styles had statistical significance on the exceeding standard rate of time spent watching videos in the preschoolers (P<0.05). The results of multi-factor analysis revealed that paternal education level of high school or below (OR=1.409, 95%CI:1.174-1.691), maternal education level of high school or below (OR=1.337, 95%CI:1.116-1.602) and the group with low score of democracy based on parental rearing styles (OR=1.193, 95%CI:1.039-1.369) were risk factors for excessive screen time in the preschoolers, whereas parents as preschoolers' main caregivers (OR=0.631, 95%CI:0.536-0.742), the group with low score of indulgence based on parental rearing styles (OR=0.816, 95%CI:0.704-0.946) and the group with low score of inconsistency based on parental rearing styles (OR=0.827, 95%CI:0.710-0.963) were protective factors for excessive screen time in the preschoolers. Conclusion Excessive screen time is prevalent among the preschoolers in Wuhu City, and parental rearing styles are related to the children's screen time. It is necessary to enhance the propaganda about the harmfulness of excessive screen time and advocate the democratic parenting style so as to promote the healthy growth of children.
