Abstract:Objective To analyze the deficiency and variation trends of trace elements like calcium, iron and zinc among children aged 1-7 years in Baqiao District of Xi’an City in 2013 and 2017, and to provide a theoretical basis for a reasonable diet for local children. Methods Data regarding the above-mentioned three trace elements in preschoolers who underwent physical examination in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Medical University in 2013 and 2017 were collected and classified into the age groups of >0-1 year, >1-3 years and >3-7 years. We analyzed the above-mentioned three trace elements in the preschoolers in different age groups and different years. Results Analysis of the data in 2013 and 2017 showed that there were statistically significant differences in the average values of calcium, iron and zinc among preschoolers in different age groups (P<0.05). The test results in 2013 and 2017 revealed that the total deficiency rates of calcium, iron and zinc in the preschoolers in Baqiao District were 42.42% and 25.41%, 16.36% and 19.14%, 0.26% and 13.16% respectively. The deficiency rates of calcium, iron and zinc were significantly different in the preschoolers of different age groups (P<0.05) as well as in a comparison between 2013 and 2017 (P<0.05). Conclusions Calcium deficiency rate in the preschoolers in Baqiao District was improved. Iron deficiency rate was declined to some extent, but zinc deficiency rate was increased significantly. It is necessary to continuously promote dietary plans for reasonable supplementation of calcium and iron, increase people’s awareness of zinc and actively propagandize zinc supplementation.
