Abstract:Objective To investigate the usage situation and awareness rate of antibiotics among guardians of children aged 0-6 years in the rural area of Weinan City so as to provide evidence for developing the relative policies. Methods The self-designed household questionnaire about awareness and usage situation of antibiotics was used to conduct a face-to-face interview in September, 2015. Chi-square test was employed for comparing the incidence and constituent ratio, and the multi-factor model was analyzed by binary logistic regression analysis. Results A total of 3 counties, 9 towns, 27 villages and 250 households were surveyed in this study. 250 valid questionnaires were retrieved, involving 215 (86%) females and 35 (14%) males. Among the guardians surveyed, the youngest was 22 years old and the eldest 72 years old, with the median age of 50 years. The total awareness rate of antibiotics was 36.24%. The awareness rate was higher in guardians of younger age groupthan those of elder age group. The higher the educational background, the higher the awareness rate. The awareness rate of parents as the guardians was the highest. The awareness rate was higher in guardians from Dali County than those from other counties. The nearer the town center, the higher the awareness rate. Educational background was the factor influencing the guardians’ awareness of antibiotics. Among the 185 guardians knowingantibiotics, 84.32% would purchase antibiotics by themselves and the main source was the drugstore. In the process of the purchase, 50.27% did not get a doctor’s advice. Conclusions The awareness rate of antibiotics in the guardians of children aged 0-6 years in the rural area of Weinan City in 2015 is low, and guardians with low educational level as well as grandparents as the caregivers are the key groups. It is necessary to strengthen the management of medical retail stalls in the rural area and conduct health education on medication safety and antibiotic use by doctors so as to reduce the risk of unreasonable use of pediatric antibiotics.
