Abstract:Objective To analyze the prevalence rates of hypertension and diabetes mellitus and their related factors among adults in Yantai City so as to provide suggestions for hypertension and diabetes mellitus prevention and control. Methods With a method of sampling, a questionnaire survey was conducted among permanent residents aged 18 years and above in five districts of Yantai City in 2019. Physical examination and blood glucose test were performed. The data were analyzed by SPSS 22.0 software. Chi-square test was employed to compare the differences in the prevalence rates of hypertension and diabetes mellitus among different populations, and their related factors were identified by logistic regression analysis. Results A total of 14,662 residents were surveyed. The prevalence rates of hypertension and diabetes mellitus were 34.33% and 13.03%, respectively. The prevalence rates of both diseases were higher in males than in females (both P<0.05). The results of multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that age, excessive drinking, overweight, and obesity were the risk factors for hypertension, while higher education background, and adequate intake of fruits and vegetables were the protective factors for hypertension. Age, overweight, obesity, and hypertension were the risk factors for diabetes mellitus, whereas higher education background, and adequate intake of fruits and vegetables were the protective factors for diabetes mellitus. Conclusion The prevalence rates of hypertension and diabetes mellitus were higher in adults in Yantai City. Comprehensive prevention and control interventions on risk factors should be taken for key population groups.
